Flyer Design That Converts: How to Make Flyers People Act On
In this guide
A flyer has one job: get someone to act. Buy a ticket, visit the shop, send a WhatsApp message, show up on Sunday. Yet most flyers are designed to impress the client who paid for them, not the stranger scrolling past them on WhatsApp Status at 11pm.
I design flyers and e-flyers for events, churches, real estate, photographers and small businesses at theHoracle Studio — you can see a selection in our e-flyer gallery. These are the principles that separate flyers that work from flyers that just look busy.
Start with one goal
Before opening any design tool, answer: what is the one thing I want people to do after seeing this? Everything on the flyer should support that action.
- An event flyer wants people to attend — or buy a ticket.
- A promo flyer wants people to buy before a deadline.
- A real estate flyer wants people to book an inspection or call.
- A service flyer wants people to send a message.
If you're trying to do three of these on one flyer, make three flyers.
Design for a phone first
Most flyers in Nigeria are seen first on a phone — WhatsApp Status, Instagram feeds and stories, or forwarded in group chats — even if they're also printed. That means:
- Big, short headlines. If you have to zoom to read it, it failed.
- Key details readable at a glance — date, time, venue, price.
- A layout that works when cropped as a thumbnail or status preview.
Design at the right size for each platform rather than squeezing one A4 layout everywhere. Our flyer size guide lists the dimensions.
Build a clear hierarchy
People don't read flyers, they scan them. Guide their eyes in this order:
- 1st — the hook: the event name, the offer or the big benefit
- 2nd — the essential details: when, where, how much
- 3rd — the action: call, WhatsApp, register, scan, visit
- 4th — everything else: sponsors, small print, social handles
If everything is bold, nothing is. Use size, weight and colour to make the order obvious.
Write less, say more
Every extra word competes with the important ones.
- Cut adjectives that don't add information ("amazing", "unforgettable", "massive")
- Use specific benefits: "50% off all sneakers — this Saturday only" beats "Huge sale!"
- Put details people need, not details you want to mention
Make the call to action impossible to miss
- One clear action, written as an instruction: "WhatsApp us on [your number] to book"
- Large phone numbers with the same format everywhere
- QR codes big enough to scan from a phone screen or a printed poster — and tested before printing
- Short links people can type if they're not tapping
Use images that earn their place
- Use sharp, well-lit photos — blurry images make the whole business look unreliable
- Show the product, the venue, the speaker or the result, not random stock imagery
- For real estate, lead with the best exterior or living-space shot, like we did for Olfad Homes
- Never stretch images or use screenshots of screenshots
Keep it on brand
A flyer that looks like your other materials builds recognition every time it's shared. Use your brand colours, fonts and logo consistently, and create templates for recurring events or weekly promotions. Our branding checklist helps you set those foundations.
Get the details right
The most expensive flyer mistake isn't ugly design — it's a wrong date, phone number or price after 1,000 copies have been printed and the e-flyer has been forwarded to hundreds of groups. Before approving:
- Read every number out loud
- Check names, titles and spellings of guests
- Confirm the venue address and time
- Test every link and QR code
Different flyers, different priorities
Event and church flyers
Lead with the event name and theme, then date, time and venue. Speakers or performers can carry the visual if their photos are strong. Include how to attend — free, ticketed, registration link.
Promo and sales flyers
Lead with the offer and the deadline. Show the product clearly. Make the price — or the saving — unmistakable.
Real estate flyers
Lead with the best image and the property type and location. Include key features (bedrooms, size, title documents if relevant), price or "price on request", and an inspection call to action.
Service and rate card flyers
Make packages easy to compare and prices clear. A rate card like the one we designed for Ponmile Fashoranti Photography answers questions before customers have to ask.
Before you print
Digital and print flyers have different technical needs: colour mode, resolution, bleed and safe margins. Read our print-ready files checklist before sending anything to a printer.
