The Branding Checklist for Small Businesses

You don't need a big budget to look professional. You need consistency. Most small businesses I meet in Lagos don't have a "bad" brand — they have five slightly different ones: a logo from one designer, flyers from another, an Instagram page with its own colours, and a shop sign that matches none of them.

This checklist is what I go through with clients at theHoracle Studio before we design anything. Work through it yourself and you'll know exactly where your brand stands — and what to fix first.

Part 1: Foundations

Before colours and logos, get clear on these. Write the answers down; they guide every design decision after.

  • What do you do, in one sentence? If you can't say it simply, your customers can't either.
  • Who is your ideal customer? Be specific: "working mothers in Lekki who want healthy meals delivered", not "everyone".
  • Why should they choose you? Price, quality, speed, expertise, personality — pick what's true and defensible.
  • What three words should people use to describe you? Premium, friendly, bold, reliable, playful…
  • Who are your main competitors, and how do they look? You want to stand out, not blend in.

Part 2: Visual identity

  • Do you have your logo as a vector file (SVG, PDF or AI), not just a JPG?
  • Is there a simplified version that works small — as a WhatsApp profile picture or favicon?
  • Do you have light and dark versions for different backgrounds?
  • Does it still work in one colour (for stamps, embroidery, engraving)?

Not sure which file is which? Read logo file formats explained.

Colours

  • Have you chosen a primary colour and one or two supporting colours?
  • Do you know their exact values — HEX/RGB for screens and CMYK for print?
  • Are you using the same colours everywhere, not "close enough" versions picked by eye?

Typography

  • Have you chosen one or two fonts — one for headings, one for body text?
  • Are they readable on a phone screen?
  • Are they licensed for commercial use, and available for your website?

Imagery and graphic style

  • Do your photos share a consistent look (lighting, background, editing style)?
  • Do you have recurring graphic elements — shapes, patterns, icons — that make your designs recognisable?

Part 3: Voice and messaging

  • Do you have a short tagline or positioning line?
  • Is your tone consistent across captions, emails and replies?
  • Do you have a standard bio for Instagram, WhatsApp Business and Google?
  • Do you describe your services the same way everywhere, with the same names and prices?

Part 4: Touchpoints audit

Go through every place a customer meets your brand and check it against your foundations:

  • Instagram profile picture, bio, highlights and post templates
  • WhatsApp Business profile, catalogue and status updates
  • Website and Google Business Profile
  • Business cards, letterheads, invoices and receipts
  • Flyers and banners
  • Signage, packaging, labels and uniforms
  • Email signature

Anything that looks like a different company is a priority to fix.

Part 5: Templates and guidelines

Consistency survives only if it's easy. Make sure you have:

  • Social media templates for posts, stories and announcements
  • Flyer templates for recurring promotions or events
  • Document templates for quotes, invoices and proposals
  • A one-page brand guide listing your logo versions, colours, fonts and do's and don'ts — shareable with any designer or printer

Part 6: Print readiness

If you print anything, check:

  • Colours specified in CMYK, with a printed proof checked against your screen colours
  • Logos and artwork in high resolution or vector format
  • Files set up with bleed and safe margins

Our print-ready file checklist covers this in detail.

Scoring yourself

Count the boxes you can confidently tick:

  • Most of them: you have a solid brand — focus on templates and consistency as you grow.
  • About half: you have the pieces but they don't match. A brand refresh and simple guidelines will make a visible difference.
  • Few of them: start with foundations, a proper logo suite, colours and fonts before spending more on marketing.
