The problem: invoicing was becoming another job

For a freelancer or small studio, finishing the work is only part of getting paid. Client details live in one place, invoice files in another, and follow-ups happen across email and chat. Rebuilding the same document, checking totals and asking whether it arrived take time away from paid work.

We started with a practical need: a tool for invoicing our own studio clients. The brief was to make a professional invoice easy to create, easy to send and easy for a client to understand on a phone.

Designing a complete invoice workflow

The workflow starts with a saved client, line items, an issue date and a due date. theHinvoicer calculates totals, taxes and discounts, assigns an invoice number and generates an A4 PDF. The business can email the invoice with its PDF attached or open the client’s WhatsApp chat with a prepared message and invoice link.

WhatsApp sharing is deliberately manual: the owner reviews and sends the message in WhatsApp. Opening a chat does not prove that a message was sent or delivered. The client opens the invoice link without signing up and can download the PDF.

A small business should look like itself

Branding is part of the product rather than an extra design task. A business uploads its logo, selects its colours and previews how its identity appears across the dashboard, invoice, client page and email. We paid attention to readable contrast and to names with accents and Yoruba tone marks in the generated PDFs.

Follow up with useful context

Read receipts show when a client opens an invoice link. The owner can record payments, including partial payments, and keep the remaining balance visible. Recording a payment is a business action; it is not a claim that the app has independently verified a bank transfer.

Pro adds scheduled invoice emails, recurring invoices for ongoing work and polite payment reminders. These features address repeat tasks such as monthly retainers and following up on overdue invoices. Owners get context before reminders go out so they can update invoices that have already been paid.

Built for Nigerian businesses and international clients

Invoices support NGN and USD. Subscription checkout selects regional pricing by country, using Paystack in supported African markets and Bachs for US dollar checkout elsewhere. Invoice currency and subscription billing are separate choices: paying for a plan does not change the currency of a client’s invoice.

The product works in a browser and can be added to a home screen. Email and optional push notifications help owners stay informed without requiring another messaging app.

The engineering behind the experience

We built the application with React and TypeScript on Cloudflare Workers, with Cloudflare D1 for workspace data. The product includes workspace-scoped access, server-side validation, generated PDF invoices, email workflows, scheduled jobs and a client-facing invoice page. The interface adapts to desktop and mobile use.

What we are learning from early testers

theHinvoicer is live and being improved with early testers. We added limited first-party feature measurement to understand which actions people use, how many workspaces adopt them and where to focus improvements. Internal testing is separated from customer activity. These events do not include invoice contents, client contact details or message text.

The next improvements will be guided by how testers use the product: creating invoices, sharing them, recording payments and returning for their next billing cycle.
